The green grass was covered with bright, colorful flowers that sprung up out of the ground. White, puffy clouds swayed gently against the light blue sky. Leaves rustled in the wind, and the birds chirped with delight. Inside a large red chicken coop, three chickens looked behind the wire mesh.
“Hey! Our owner’s coming back with something!” said one chicken, Bill.
“What is it?” said another rooster, Bob.
The smallest of the three chickens, Bruce, walked over and squinted to get a better look.
“It’s definitely alive. It has big floppy ears, great big jaws and huge paws and terrible claws,” said Bruce to himself. “IT’S A DOG!”
“RUN FOR YOUR LIVESSS!” yelled Bob.
“THE DOG IS COMING TO GOBBLE YOU UP!” hollered Bill. The roosters scrambled to hide in the roosting area, where they were safe and sound.
The owner set the big dog down and walked inside. Immediately, the dog put his head down and started sniffing.
“WOOF WOOF! WOOF WOOF WOOF! I smell some juicy chicken!” the very tiny dog barked. Suddenly the dog noticed the chicken coop and ran over to it.
“Yo chickens! Why are you in MY territory? Get out of my backyard or else I’ll eat you up.” said the dog. Then, he attempted to break through the wire mesh to get to the chickens, but failed.
The roosters, realizing what just happened, started to jeer at the dog.
“You thought you could gobble us up! Ha ha ha. You’re too small to eat us!” said Bob.
But the kind rooster, Bruce, shushed his two friends. Bruce realized the dog wasn’t about to eat them, and was actually very kind. Bruce said to him, “I apologize for the rude behavior by my brothers. What is your name, dog?”
Without warning, fat raindrops started plummeting towards the ground. Soon, a flash of lightning lit the sky, and a BOOM of lightning followed.
The dog started to cower. “HHHEELLPP! I DON’T LIKE LOUD NOISES! GET ME OUT OF HHEERREE!”
The roosters were also afraid of the lightning, and hid in the corner. But the brave Bruce quickly scampered down and opened the chicken coop door.
“Quickly! Get inside the coop!” Bruce said to the dog. The wet and shaking dog was small enough to squeeze through the door.
The dog shook off the water and stammered at Bruce. “I-i-i d-d-din’t m-m-ean w-w-hat I-i-i s-s-adi e-e-arlier. C-c-an y-y-ou f-f-forgive m-me?”
“What’s your name, dog?” asked the rooster.
“M-m-my n-n-name i-i-is R-r-ufus,” said the shivering dog.
“Well, Rufus, nice to meet you. I hope we can become friends,” said Bruce.
