Social media companies should ensure trends are not harmful before promoting them on their site.

On social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, there are many dangerous trends. According to undefined, street racing can cause speed-related crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities. Also, the Galaxy Gas trend can cause headaches, lightheadedness, vitamin B12 deficiency, and death. Additionally, the tranquilizer challenge can cause injury, respiratory depression, or increased crime. However, these trends are still popular and dangerous, so social media companies should stop these trends.

In the 1990s, there were chat rooms and forums where people could communicate. Then, in 2005, Youtube launched which allowed people to easily share videos. This led to some risky pranks and stunts. In the 2010s, smartphones made it easy to share videos on Instagram, Youtube, and Facebook. Online challenges were popular and mostly harmless. In the 2020s, social media algorithms improved and dangerous trends spread fast.

Social media companies should make sure there aren’t any harmful trends because the trends can lead to health issues. For example, the “Tide Pod Challenge” involved biting into a Tide Pod, which is poisonous, and many people were injured due to this. Since eating Tide Pods is obviously dangerous, the social media companies should ensure it is not advertised on their platform. Also, many people have been buying squishy dumplings because they are popular on social media. According to a BBC news article on squishy dumplings, the Welsh council has warned parents that some of these toys could be unsafe because an investigation by Trading Standards officers at Swansea Council discovered harmful chemicals in these toys. The popularity of these toys shows that social media cannot be advertising squishy dumplings because the Welsh Council proves that they are dangerous to health.

Some people might think that social media companies are not responsible for problems caused by dangerous trends because they are not the ones posting the trends, however, the social media companies could definitely moderate the content and make sure the trends are safe to make sure everyone stays safe.
Stay safe on social media and don’t follow unsafe trends.
