The 1975 were performing in the Good Vibes Festival, in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. The Good Vibes Festival is one of the most highly-anticipated events for Malaysian music lovers, and the 1975 traveled across the world to participate.
However, the event was cut short when the lead singer Healy gave a speech about the Malaysia government’s viewpoint of homosexuality before kissing bandmate Ross MacDonald, the brass player, in their rendition of I Like America and America Likes Me.
Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil described Healy’s actions as “very rude.”
The Malaysia government had laws about same-sex acts. There’s no LGBT rights in Malaysia, so the Good Vibes Festival ended early.
Fahmi said, “There will be no compromise with any party that challenges, belittles or violates Malaysian laws” on Meta.
The agency that approved the foreign performers for their act described Healy’s actions as “an insult and disrespecting the laws of the country.” The agency also said the band will be blacklisted from ever playing in Malaysian again.
