The Laos Cave Flood Rescue Still Missed Two People
On May 20, 2026, a group of locals in the Providence of Xaisomboun hiked 2.4 miles through rugged mountainous terrain to reach the Laos cave. The entrance into the cave was only large enough to fit one person at a time. Soon though, heavy monsoons came pouring and brought flash floods. The water blocked the cave’s entrance, trapping the eight locals deep underground. One man escaped through the rushing waters and alerted authorities. Rescuers rushed to the scene, and within a week, they found 5 miners on a high rock. The authorities managed to guide one of them out slowly but surely. On the following day after the rescue, strong pumps were brought to the scene to lower the water level. The other four villagers saw a chance and swam out without help.
Rescuers looked for the last two, but extreme conditions and natural disasters forced them to stop the operation on June 20, 2026. One of the survivors huddled on the rock. “courage was born from fear.” The group huddled together, and the will to see their families again. Finnish diver Mikko Bassi, who was part of the international rescue team, said, “The environment is extremely remote and hostile that starts with four-kilometer jungle track to the site and when inside the mine you have to navigate hundreds of metres of constant restrictions, flood waters, collapse hazards and high risk of contaminated air quality.” This is an ongoing problem. Locals, driven by their poverty, go through unmapped tunnels just to search for gold, and they do it without safety gear. Human Rights Groups hope the government will make rules that don’t allow illegal mining. They also hope for better work safety.
