FORMER TENNIS CHAMPION SERENA WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES COMEBACK
Tennis star Serena Williams has announced a surprise return to competitive tennis, accepting a wildcard for the women’s doubles at London’s Queen’s Club this June after a nearly four-year absence. The 44-year-old, who previously stepped away to focus on her family, will play alongside teenager Victoria Mboko on her favored grass surface.
This comeback follows weeks of rumors sparked by her inclusion in the drug-testing pool and a recent social media video showing her on court, officially marking a new chapter for the American icon. Having last played competitively in 2022, this move brings one of the most celebrated figures in sports history back to the game.
Widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, Williams boasts 23 Grand Slam singles titles—the most by any player in the Open Era—along with 14 Grand Slam doubles titles won with her sister, Venus. Over a 27-year career, she dominated all surfaces, winning seven Wimbledon titles, seven Australian Opens, six US Opens, and three French Opens, while earning a record-breaking $95 million in prize money.
For her return to Queen’s Club, she will partner with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. Williams has stated she has nothing to prove and is not putting pressure on herself, with regard to results. According to Williams, her primary motivation is the chance for her daughters to see her play professional tennis. While not indicating a permanent return to singles, her appearance on the grass courts brings her unparalleled passion back to the sport. The tennis community now looks forward to seeing the legend back in action at the iconic London venue.
