A Day Without Blue
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! The alarm clock rang, piercing Bob’s ears. He tossed his blanket off his body and closed his alarm clock, looking at it. Yellow? Wait, why is it yellow? Wasn’t it blue? He knew he wasn’t hallucinating. As he looked around his room, he stared in shock. Everything in his room that was blue turned into yellow. His blue blanket, blue alarm clock, blue stuffed animal, and even his drawing that had blue in it magically turned into yellow. He was stunned. Am I in a dream? He quickly changed into a new set of clothes and rushed to the bathroom.
His blue toothbrush, yellow. What is happening today? He looked down at his watch: 7:20 AM. Knowing that he would need to leave for school soon, he quickly brushed his teeth. As he walked outside, he saw his breakfast on the table: a bowl of cereal with some apple slices. Good thing there aren’t that many blue foods.
His mom said, “Just in time, Bob. I just finished cutting up the apple.”
“Mom, why is everything blue turning into yellow today?” he asked.
“What’s blue? A new color?”
“Yes, a color. Don’t you know what the color blue is?” he replied.
“I’ve never heard of a color called blue,” his mother said, looking at Bob with a confused face.
He searched up blue on his phone, and proudly showed it to his mom as he said, “Look, the color blue!”
“Bob, that just says no results found.”
“Huh?” He looks back at his phone, surprised to see that there was no result for blue.
“Hurry up and eat your food. It’s already 7:26, you need to leave by 7:35.”
He shoved his breakfast in his mouth, hoping to get to school faster to ask his friend if he knew anything about the mystery. He finished his breakfast in record time and picked his backpack up.
“Bye, mom!”
He walked as fast as he could to the school and looked at the “blue” banner representing his school. It was now yellow. No way. He opened the main entrance door and walked into the school, walking up the stairs to his homeroom classroom. There, he saw his classmate, Jake. As he entered the classroom, he quickly asked, “Jake, have you ever heard of the color blue?”
Jake replied, confused: “What is that? I’ve never heard of that color.”
“Never mind, just wanted to know.”
As Bob walked through the hallways, he noticed things that he couldn’t get used to. A teacher who had blue hair now had yellow hair. All of the posters that had blue on them now had yellow instead. 1st period passed, 2nd period passed, and almost all of the periods had now passed. Last period, art. What a great class to take when I apparently don’t know my colors. His art teacher walked in.
“Alright, class, today we will start painting our own sunsets!” his art teacher said.
As she distributed the paints, Bob noticed every color except for blue. WAIT! I CAN MAKE THE COLOR BLUE! He took the bottles with purple and green paint, and took a little bit of each color. After, he mixed in white to make a lighter shade. He picked up the piece of paper with his “new” color, blue, and showed it to the class. The class, including the teacher, gasped in shock. “Did you just create a new color?!”, his art teacher yelled, eyes wide and mouth open.
“I think?”
“This is crazy!”, a classmate said.
Seems like blue does exist, after all.
