FIFA Directors are Faced With a Severe Ultimatum
By Rachel Zhang
During the 2026 World Cup, FIFA executives were called into a hastily organized meeting at Waldorf Astoria hotel of New York City. They were given until midnight to sign off on a contract that could change football forever, and was expected to cause more disputes between the sport’s leaders.
The FIFA executives were a group of important directors known as the FIFA bureau of the management board. They were told to sign off on the creation of FIFA Forward Enterprise, or FFE, which would control World Cup commercial revenue like broadcasting and sponsorship. During the assigned timeline, 3 members, Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, legal head Emilio Garcia, and chief of staff Dan O’Toole, voted in favor of it while 2, chief operating officer Kevin Lamour and finance head Thomas Peyer, declined to back it. Since there was a majority vote, Infantino moved forward with his plan.
, led by Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner who is President Trump’s son-in-law. This deal would give private investors partial control of the World Cup. Furthermore, the plans were made in secrecy with Joshua Kushner’s fund Thrive Eternal and JPMorgan Chase. FIFA’s five member financial panel was pressured into approving a plan to privatize parts of the World Cup, despite most members never having heard of it beforehand. Following a tense gathering at the hotel, attenders realized that stalling would infuriate FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
Leaked details regarding this plan led to global backlash. The UEFA, a group made up of the continent’s 55 soccer-playing nations, was extremely angered and threatened to boycott all future FIFA events. Other soccer governing bodies across Asia and North America also criticized FIFA’s secretive push to approve the plan. Some political figures, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, joined the soccer leaders in forcefully condemning the proposal. Faced with the threat of arguments in international sports, Infantino officially canceled the controversial private equity plan days later.
FIFA is currently in a political crisis. They are currently handling intense scrutiny, internal relations, and the results of two scandals that have put President Gianni Infantino’s leadership in severe jeopardy.
