The Secret Behind Climbing Gas Prices

Recently, U.S. gas prices have been increasing. According to the New York Times, U.S. gas prices are the highest they have been since the beginning of the war in Iran. From 2017 to 2022, the gas prices had increased rapidly. However, in 2025 and 2026, gas prices increased from three dollars per gallon to four dollars per gallon on average.

Why is this happening? The most important reason is the war between US-Israel and Iran. Iran controls an important channel, the Strait of Hormuz, that is used to transport the gas that the US needs. Because the US attacked Iran, Iran closed this channel and gas cannot be transported to the US, causing gas prices to rise.
This situation makes local people feel anger and anxiety. People feel angry to pay such high prices. So, the U.S. government has carry out some policy. For instance, in winter the government won’t cut off the electricity because of citizens can’t afford the gas price. Also, the government are repairing old power plants then, in some extreme weather, they can use backup power.
