Outbreak of Hantavirus on MV Hondius
On May 2, 2026, the MV Hondius, a Dutch cruise ship, was found to have an outbreak of a rare virus, hantavirus. With about 250 people on board, 11 were infected and three passed away from the rare disease.

Hantavirus is a virus that can be transmitted through breathing the dust of dried rat droppings or waste. This specific strain of hantavirus, the Andes strain, is known as one of the few strains that can transmit the disease to humans. Many medical professionals say that the danger to the rest of the world is low, even though there has been an outbreak.

After the outbreak, the passengers of the MV Hondius disembarked in the Canary Islands. They headed towards their own countries, wearing breathing masks and full-body protective gear. However, some were evacuated early due to medical emergencies. Many of the passengers who went on the MV Hondius are being monitored. Countries like Spain and France are taking measures to isolate and quarantine passengers for 42 days, which is the incubation period of hantavirus. According to NBC News, American passengers will be allowed home if they have no symptoms, but they will still be monitored for 42 days.

Currently, “there have been nine laboratory-confirmed cases among people on board the Hondius and two suspected cases.” (NBC NEWS) A Canadian passenger had also been confirmed to have hantavirus. Many experts are investigating exactly how the virus spreads. Many people are worried that this hantavirus outbreak will be similar to the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, “We have been repeating the same answer many times. This is not another COVID. And the risk to the public is low. So they shouldn’t be scared, and they shouldn’t panic.”

Many people are still being monitored, and many cases have already been found. Experts and medical professionals continue to investigate what hantavirus does and how it transmits. Further reports are expected in the future.
