A Day When the Internet was Quiet
John had just woken up. He brushed his teeth, changed his clothes, and ate his breakfast. As he walked back to his room, he reviewed what he had to do for the day. I have a project, 2 ELA assignments, and a math assignment. I should be able to finish all of this by today. He clicked on the power button on his computer to start his assignments.
As he opened his school website, he was surprised to see that he had no Wi-Fi. He troubleshooted, restarting his computer and reopening it, but with no improvement. He walked outside and saw his mom.
“Is the Wi-Fi broken?” he asked.
“I don’t know why. I’ll try calling the Wi-Fi company to see,” his mom replied.
John took out his school assignments. As he finished his work, he glanced outside the window, wondering why there were missing wires.
“Mom, did the wires disappear? I think that’s why the Wi-Fi isn’t working.”
“It does look like there is something wrong. I can’t contact the Wi-Fi company. How about you just finish the work that you can? It’s Saturday, you still have Sunday to finish.”
“But my deadline is tomorrow for my math assignment and project!” he said, worried.
“I’ll text your teachers, I’m sure they’ll understand why you couldn’t finish.”
He decided to go to the park, as he had nothing to do, still worried about his assignments. Once he arrived, he was shocked. There were crowds of people. That’s weird, usually there are barely any people. As he walked around the park filled with swings, slides, and people, he saw his friend.
He walked towards his friend, dodging the crowds.
“Liam, you’re at the park too?” John said.
“Hey John, I didn’t know you were here too!” Liam replied.
“There usually aren’t many people here. Oh, wait, I almost forgot to ask. Can you send me a picture of the math assignment? My Wi-Fi is down, and I can’t access the internet,” he said.
“Sure, I can send you a picture, but what’s Wi-Fi and ‘The Internet’? I’ve never heard of those before,” Liam replied.
“What do you mean, the internet and Wi-Fi are the most known thing in the world, and we use them to do our homework…”
“What? All of our homework is on paper..”
“Really?” He looked at his phone. 6:00 PM “I have to go, I’ll see you at school.” He waved his hand; however, his friend looked puzzled. John felt like he was crazy, even though he knew the internet existed.
He walked back home and ate dinner.
“Mom, did you fix the Wi-Fi yet?”
“I’ve been calling the Wi-Fi company, but they never picked up. I don’t know what’s wrong.”
John finished his dinner and went to his room. He tried opening his computer to do his homework again, but nothing would make it work. He decided to go to sleep early so he could wake up earlier, hoping the Wi-Fi would be fixed overnight. He brushed his teeth, changed into his pajamas, sat on his bed, and fell asleep.
The next morning, he woke up to the sound of his alarm. He closed his alarm and opened his computer again, to see that the Wi-Fi had come back. Yes! I can finish my assignments! As he looked through his computer, he saw that there were no new notifications. That’s weird. He checked social media and his school website, only to find no notifications. It was as if the internet had became quiet for a day.
