Did This Zoo Do a Good Job Searching for Their Lost Capybara?
In my opinion, I believe that Marwell Zoo has made a big mistake in handling a lost capybara.
A cute capybara escaped from Marwell Zoo on Monday the 16th of March. Why did it escape? According to BBC, the zoo said that the pair of giant rodents made a break from freedom and managed to escape from their temporary holding area the next day. There were two capybaras who escaped. Their names are Tango and Samba. Tango was quickly caught by the zoo keepers, but Samba ran to the nearby area.
On Sunday the 22nd of March, the capybara was found. She was stopped by a lady walking her dog by the side of River Itchen, before she jumped into the water and kept swimming.
The zoo must be responsible for the animals. If the animal escaped, there must be a mistake by the zoo. Instead of searching for the capybara themselves, the zoo asked other people to search for it. The zoo simply let other people take videos if they saw the capybaras. They didn’t find the capybara by themselves, but let other people find them. This was irresponsible.
The zoo needs to protect the animals and can’t let them escape in first place. The zoo should take more care of them but not just “lock them in the cage” and ignore it. In conclusion, I think that the zoo has a problem with taking good care of the capybara.
Some people may think that everyone makes mistakes and the zoo just made a small mistake because finally the capybara is coming back. However, I believe that the capybara came back because the neighborhood people found it and returned it, but the zoo has the responsibility to protect them. It was a mistake but the zoo should have fixed the mistake themselves.
In my opinion, the zoo should strengthen measures for managing animals, so that it can avoid losing animals again.
