Julia Whelan is one of the most prominent voices in the audiobook industry recording over 400 books and becoming one of Audible’s most popular narrators.
Whelan grew up in Salem, Oregon as an only child and a voracious reader. At five, she was already acting in local theater productions. She started traveling to Los Angeles and auditioned for the show “Once and Again,” playing the character of Grace Manning for three seasons before the show was canceled. After attending Middlebury College in Vermont, she returned to Los Angeles to pick up her acting career, but the auditions did not work out for her. She was introduced into the audiobook industry when she was approached by a friend’s mother who worked at an audio publisher during her graduation.
She got her big break in 2012 when she narrated The Witness , a best-selling book by Nora Roberts. She had another breakthrough when she was chosen to narrate the main character for Gillian Flynn’s blockbuster novel Gone Girl. In 2018, she was contacted by an entrepreneur working on a start-up called Audm, a business that provided audio narrations of magazine articles. She was hired as head of production.
Before the pandemic started, Whelan began to write Thank You For Listening, a story about a successful woman in the audio industry, which is compiled from her own writings and experiences.
As one of the most in-demand audiobook recorders of today, Julia Whelan’s impact on the industry is far reaching.
