We all remember who wrote that song about taking a horse to the old town road. Also, the one who was sued by Nike for their Satan shoes. That’s Lil Nas X.

A proud queer artist is back in the spotlight for calling out the BET awards for not nominating him. Though Lil Nas X has been nominated 6 times overall and has even performed at the event, no nomination this year makes him feel there were other reasons behind it.

Lil Nas X addressed his absence by heading to Twitter with a now-deleted tweet: “Thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. Black excellence!” Being the social “provocateur” he is, he has been trolling BET and released a new song that repeats a catchy phrase directed at it.

A celebrity going haywire over not being nominated by an Awards show he already had success with sounds ridiculous at first. But Lil Nas X is a Black and queer artist in a predominantly white industry. Based on his performance last year where he kissed a background dancer, he believes the reason behind not being nominated is because of his sexuality, race, or both.

Lil Nas X having criticism about an award show he has won an award on does not make him unique. Black artists like Drake and Frank Ocean have also criticized awards shows which disparaged Black and/or LGBTQ+ artists even though those shows had previously given them awards.

Frank Ocean didn’t submit his album “Blonde” to The Recording Academy since the Academy did not represent the Black and LGBTQ+ community well. Drake didn’t take his nominations for his album “Certified Lover Boy” because, in 2017, the Grammys referred to him as a “rapper, even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song,” Drake said. This meant either rapping in the past or simply being Black was the reason he was put in that category.

Lil Nas X’s rampage on the BET Awards wasn’t only a celebrity raging over a nomination. It’s a social issue and it’s not just Lil Nas X who feels this way. Dedicating an entire song to troll the BET Awards is not doing much for him but recognizing this exclusion in the music industry might not be a terrible intent after all.
