The tiny bell that hung over the door rang a quiet melody as Sara walked in. The glass windows reflected the sunlight, the smell of coffee delighted everyone’s nose buds, and tiny fairy lights were hung over the ceiling. The atmosphere couldn’t be better for a chilly, quiet afternoon. Sara waited in line for her coffee and looked around. Everyone who had their coffee was at a table either looking at their phone or looking out at the view from the glass windows. There was soft chattering, almost like whispering, and music with saxophones and trumpets was playing in the background.
After Sara got her coffee, she saw an empty table and started walking towards it while scrolling through her phone. As she was walking, she bumped into a man, and her coffee spilled all over the floor and onto the man’s shirt. Sara could feel the heat around her. She quickly apologized and gave some tissues to the guy.
“No, you’re fine. Here, let’s use these to clean up the floor.” The man said. And, with that said, he started cleaning up. Sara hesitated at first, but eventually she started to clean up with him.
After they cleaned up the mess, Sara got a new coffee. She sat down at a table, and the same guy sat directly across from Sara. He gave out his hand for a handshake, and Sara hesitated for a moment, but decided to accept the gesture.
“Joseph.” The guy said.
“Sara.” Sara said.
“I like your bag.” Joseph complimented.
“Thanks, and I like your sweater, well, before I spilled coffee on it. I’m so sorry about that.” Sara said.
“No problem! I have, like, five of these anyways.” Joseph said.
“That’s great to hear.” Sara said.
Then, they quietly sipped their coffee.
“So, do you have anything interesting going on in your life?” Joseph asked.
“Um, I don’t really think so. I’m currently a college student, so just a lot of work I guess.” Sara replied.
“Yeah, I don’t really know what I’m doing right now. I’m also a college student.” Joseph said.
“Wow, that’s, um, a coincidence.” Sara said.
“Yeah,” Joseph said.
“What’s your major?” Sara asked.
“I do computer science, how about you?” Joseph said.
“Oh, my major is finance.” Sara said.
“That’s interesting. I wanted to do it at first, but I decided that the specialized area in business was too boring.” Joseph said.
“Boring? That’s the last word I would describe financing! It’s so exciting and it has many career opportunities.” Sara said.
“True.” Joseph said.
“The view is really pretty here. I like cool weather, like the weather after it rains. It’s just nice to walk through it.” Sara said.
“I’m honestly ok with whatever weather comes, as long as it’s not a natural disaster of course.” Joseph said, drinking his last sip of coffee.
“Well, it was nice chatting with you Sara. I come here quite often, so if you want to, we can chat another time.” Joseph said.
“That would be lovely.” Sara said.
Just when Sara put her coffee down, she could see Joseph slightly smiling at her, and her face blushed just like a rose.
