Russia Accuses Ukraine of Drone Attacks on Moscow

The Russian-Ukranian war drags into its 18th month of warfare, and no Russian or Ukrainian city seems safe from this raging battle. On Sunday, Russia’s Defense Military declared that Ukraine had fired three drones at Moscow.

The ministry stated that one drone was destroyed in Odinstovo while the other two struck commercial buildings in Moscow after being shot down. Sergey Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow, posted in a Telegram messaging app that there had been no injuries in the attack and the only losses suffered were damages to the buildings, including one of Moscow’s premier skyscrapers. Sobyanin said that the attacks hit the 21st floor, which had been accommodating the Economic Development Ministry.

After the attack, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskovy assured journalists that Russian air defenses had successfully stopped the drones and were working on a defense system. When asked about the capital city’s security, he redirected the question to the Defense Ministry, which acknowledged the threat and promised more efforts to prevent future attacks from Ukraine.

Although Ukraine usually doesn’t take responsibility for its attacks on Russian territory to maintain an element of surprise, Senior Ukranian Officials came forwards on claims that the recent drone attacks were planned and executed by Kyiv. In his Sunday evening address, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, didn’t mention the attacks specifically, but noted that the war was gradually returning to Russian territory.

On the other side, Russian officials claim that the attack reflects Ukraine’s pitiful attempts at a counter-offensive to recapture Russian-claimed territory. As residents of Moscow, who believed that war would never reach their city, are thrown into the midst of warfare, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin’s approval rating plummets as distressed Russians criticize his poor management of the war.

A resident named Polina, who lived in the neighboring building next to the business center that had been hit, said, “Everything started to shake. It felt like the whole building had come down. I looked out of the window; I live on the side where there’s less damage. And it felt strange – the damage was so minor.”

As Russia and Ukraine continue to trade attacks, the war doesn’t seem to have an end, and no citizens from either side seem entirely safe.
