I still remember the time that my family and I went to Disneyland to see the fireworks on Independence Day. While it was beautiful to watch, the small body of water nearby was left full of explosive debris after the show was over.

Fireworks are definitely harmful to our ecosystem. We should consider these detrimental effects and celebrate the holiday without fireworks.

Fireworks contain toxic chemicals. For example, red fireworks contain strontium salts, lithium salts, and lithium carbonate, all of which are toxic. After they ignite and explode, fireworks create toxic byproducts that often fall into nearby water and harm living organisms. That water can flow to treatment facilities, which usually can’t completely filter out the toxins. Eventually, these toxins could end up in household water systems. If humans or animals drink the polluted water, they can become poisoned.

Fireworks also produce very loud sounds of around ±190 decibels. Noises that loud can cause ear damage. I always felt bad for animals after fireworks explode. They were probably scared away by the loud noises, only to return later to find their home ruined by toxic combustion byproducts.

Fireworks are costly and the government wastes lots of money each year just for pleasure. Instead, the money could be spent on meaningful projects such as cleaning up the environment. It is unreasonable to spend money on fireworks, which generate pollution that aggravates the effects of climate change.

Some people may claim that fireworks are beautiful. However, the adverse effects of fireworks still outweigh the pleasure they bring.

Watching beautiful fireworks cannot be justified due to the harm they cause to the environment. Independence Day should be celebrated without fireworks.
