Two Miners Yet To Be Found In A Flooded Laotian Cave

Divers from across the world rescued five miners trapped inside a cave in Laos on May 29th and 30th, leaving two more to save. However, due to dangerous weather and risky conditions, the search has been delayed to keep the divers safe.
On May 20, eight poor locals went into an abandoned mine, hoping to find gold. Then, the heavy monsoon rain caused a flash flood, sealing the miners inside.[passive voice, pv] One person managed to escape and notified authorities about the seven people still trapped inside.
On May 29, using LIDAR data and satellite images to scan the area, the divers found five people on a high rock edge. The divers taught one of the miners to scuba dive to escape. He emerged out of the cave on the same day the divers found him. The next day, water was pumped out of the cave to create air pockets. Then, four miners climbed out with no help from the divers. They were exhausted and famished but elated to be alive. All of them went to the hospital where they recieved care.
While the divers were exploring the cave, they heard knocking sounds. Kengkaj Bongkawong, the leader of the Thai divers, reported, “Yesterday, when we knocked, there was a signal responding back. It was a knocking sound meant to be heard. Based on our initial assessment, this is considered not to be a reflection or an echo of the sound.” A lot of divers really worried about the remaining two miners. Authorities say that they have a slim chance of being alive when found. According to DOGO news, the head of this operation says that he wouldn’t give up and that he knows that lives are at stake. However, an earthquake happened, making it unsafe to continue the search, forcing them to stop.
These miners aren’t the only ones who have risked their safety. Many poor people in Laos have been stuck in abandoned mines, searching for gold. Many hope that Laos’s government will solve reduce poverty and prohibit unsafe mining.
