“You weren’t kidding,” A majestic gray wolf exclaimed as her paws landed on the ground and her wings tucked neatly on her back. “There really is a hidden kingdom out here!” She stepped back and tried to concentrate on her surroundings. A whole mountain range split the island into two, and a clear river ran below the mountains. The plants were each unique with their own colors and designs. The place seemed so serene, as if an enchantress had made them.

A small, lanky fox landed beside her, his own wings brushing the wolf’s head. “I know! Just look! This place is beautiful. It’s much better than the mainland!” The fox’s expression turned into a frown, and he twitched his ears irritably, as if frustrated by something.

“Indeed, it’s much cleaner as well,” agreed the wolf, failing to notice her friend’s frustration. “This place is far away from the humans, but I still can’t believe how different it looks!”

“Well maybe that’s because no one has ever thought of flying so ridiculously far before.” The fox grumbled. He gave his partner a scornful look, but he averted his eyes just as quickly.

“I bet this place isn’t as great as it looks. There’s probably something that’s going to attack us sooner or later.” He said, rolling his eyes.

“Don’t be so pessimistic! Here, we can explore together!” Said the wolf, spreading her wings and dragging her friend by a paw.

“I don’t even understand why you’d like to explore. You’ve found what you’ve been looking for, now we can go home.” Said the fox, his eyes narrowing.

“No. We’re not going home again. Not back to that hellhole.” The wolf said persistently.

“Well then what do you want to do?” The fox asked.

“I plan to make this our new home. One that will stand forever away from the humans. I will make sure this place thrives, and we will guide all the of the animals here till they’ve all arrived. We could show them all the best places to hunt, build homes, and how to survive. This place will be our empire, and we will call it Askaria.”

Ellie woke up to the sound of someone (you can leave this in or change it to “a creature” or “something” outside her door. She jumped up and raced to the door, excitement coursing through her body!

Of course! Today was her birthday! She was turning one, so today was the first day she would be able explore the territories without one of the guardians with her! Best of all, her friends Nyra and Ivy would come along with her! She was practically dancing with anticipation as she opened the door.

Nyra looked like her usual self. She was a silver fox with a gradient scarf around her neck, the colors shifting from crimson red to yellow. She was strong, lean, and she always seemed to have an “I’m bored” facial expression that Ellie wished she could pull off. Nyra was the daughter of a wealthy and powerful aristocrat, which gained her popularity and lots of admirers. Ellie didn’t know if there was anybody more adored and loved than Nyra.

Ivy, on the other hand, was an arctic fox. She loved attention, but she could hardly ever get it. She was born into middle-class families, like Ellie, and did not particularly care if her family was healthy (healthy or wealthy?) or not. To her, power was everything. And she would do anything for a little bit of it. But Ellie was sure that she wasn’t as greedy and envious as everyone said she was. Ivy could be helpful, too. She would often stop by Ellie’s house to help her with chores and talk to her. Yes, she was snarky, but that was just one part of her personality! To Ellie, she was the most passionate animal in the territory.

But Ellie was just a red fox trying to fit in. The only thing she wore was a jean jacket that Nyra said came from humans.

“Well,” Nyra said, tapping her foot on the ground impatiently. “Are you done jumping around like a maniac? It’s a bit too hot to be standing in the sun waiting for your best friend to walk out the door.”

Ellie had been so excited; she didn’t even notice that her paws were twitching madly. She quickly stopped herself and jumped out the door, feeling the breeze rush by her face. It was wonderful to be outside with just her friends and the outside world! No guardians or parents to tell you what to do! She pranced around the trees, and leaped over the brook, blissfully taking in her first taste of freedom.

This was the day she’d been waiting for! She was an adult now! Free to take care of herself. She imagined herself running through the trees alone or sitting by the river, listening to the trickling sound of the water.

Suddenly, she hit her head on something hard. She stumbled back and yelped in surprise. As her vision cleared, she saw Nyra and Ivy running towards her, frantically yelling her name.

“My goodness, what happened to you?” Ivy exclaimed.

“We thought you fell into the ravine! Watch where you’re going!” Nyra scolded. But Ellie could see her shoulders relax in obvious relief.

“Sorry guys. I just got so distracted I wasn’t looking where I was going. I guess I should be more careful.” Ellie admitted. “Besides, where are we? It looks like we’re by some type of mountain.”

Ivy studied the place closer before finally looking at them again and saying, “I know where we are. We’re at the Place of the Splitting.”
