On July 23, 2023, Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner Group, turned on its creator because of the badly managed war in Ukraine. However, recently he suddenly turned back.
The Wagner Group is a group of mercenaries who fight for Russia. Over the last month, more and more billboards trying to convince Russian civilians to join the Wagner group have appeared all over Russia.
Now one of Putin’s worst fears is coming true. The country is dividing itself. This has happened before in Russia’s history. Usually, the rebellion takes over. As a result, Prigozhin’s rebellion poses a huge threat. It seems like Putin, the man who made Russia stable, is showing cracks. A Western ambassador has now said, “The system Putin built is very stable, but if I woke up one morning and saw tanks on the street, I would not be totally astonished.”
The war for Ukraine has gone horribly wrong for Russia, as thousands of deaths have loosened Putin’s grip on the Russian Federation. The Wagner Group used this to their advantage and marched from Ukraine where they were fighting all very close to Moscow. Despite this, the Russian government has tried to hide the losses in Ukraine and continue business as usual.
Consequently, Russia has not changed much. There have been sudden rebellions and collapses like in 1917 and 1991. Nobody knows for sure what “victory” is in Putin’s special military operation. But the biggest question right now is, how has Mr. Prigozhin survived so long? In Russia, even the smallest mistakes can lead to prison time.
