Jack picked up his phone and held it between his head and his shoulder.

“You ready?” Jack’s face lit up excitedly. He cracked his knuckles and jumped up and down. Logan sat in the corner, watching Jack fiddle with his phone and prepare the prank call.

“Dude, I got a bad feeling about this,” Logan mumbled sullenly. “If you get caught, I’m not taking responsibility for this.”

“Alright,” said Jack, “but this is going to be gnarly.”

“If the librarian catches us, we can’t come here anymore you realize that right?” Logan exaplained, seemingly exasperated. Yet, no matter how much Logan tried to get his friend to back off, Jack was too invested in the moment. He had absolutely no idea what Logan just said.

Jack quickly dialed the number for McDonalds and put the phone on speaker mode. He pulled out a wrinkled piece of notebook paper from his pocket and unfolded it in the sink in front of him.

“Welcome to McDonalds, how may I help?” The voice of a young man crackled through the speakers.

Jack took a deep breath before talking, and proceeded to scream directly into the mic, “I WANT BURGER!”

Logan exploded into laughter and quickly covered it up with a cough. Jack giggled into his jacket and quickly put the volume down a couple of notches so that anyone outside couldn’t hear them.

“Um, sir, please don’t yell. What type of burger would you like?” the waiter asked patiently.

Jack quickly swallowed his laugh. After attempting to put on a straight face to no avail, he ended the call and burst out giggling again. After what seemed like five straight minutes of laughing, they finally got out of breath and stayed quiet for a bit. Suddenly, there were footsteps coming down the hallway.

“Quick, get in a stall,” Logan hissed. The duo each silently went into a stall and locked the flimsy plastic door behind them. Jack put his shoes on the toilet seat and crouched down so he wasn’t visible, and nobody could see him from the outside. Logan did the same, but accidentally flushed the toilet in the process.

“Logan!” Jack whispered. “Can’t be doing that!” His blood was pumping through his body, and he was fully alert. Jack’s ears became as sharp as a dog, seeing and hearing every movement nearby. His adrenaline was fully activated.

“I’m sorry, I tried not to,” Logan replied. The footsteps were now getting dangerously close, relentlessly making their way to the bathroom where the boys were hiding. Logan hid himself in the corner and tried to make himself as invisible as possible.

Jack poked his head over the stall and frantically waved at Logan, who had his head down in his knees. After his futile attempt to try and reach Logan, he went back into his own stall, took some toilet paper, and dangled it in front of Logan’s eyes.

“I think we should make a run for it,” Jack mouthed silently.

“Are you crazy?” Logan hissed, “They’ll see us coming out!”

Jack shrugged. Just as he poked his head above the stall, a man in a T-shirt and jeans walked in and went into the stall right next to Logan.

“Now’s our chance, let’s go.” Logan motioned to Jack to get out of the bathroom, and they each tiptoed onto the ground, cautiously opening the stall door, and closing it behind them. As they slowly made their way out, they checked to make sure nobody was watching them from either side of the hallway. After the coast was seemingly clear, Jack and Logan quietly walked their way back.
