Tennis Match Injury Causes Controversy

On May 29, 2026, the ball hung high in the Parisian air, and Zeynep Sönmez had only one thought, which was to track it down. Sprinting toward the very back of the tennis court, the 24-year-old Turkish tennis star locked her eyes on the baseline. She was completely unaware of the small, plastic sponsor sign sitting directly in her path. A split second later, a sharp trip sent her tumbling face-first toward the wall. This turned what should have been a standard doubles match into a short, injury-forced retirement that ignited a fierce debate over player safety.

After her crash, her tennis partner and the umpire rushed toward her to check on her. After, the umpire called for medical attention. They diagnosed Sönmez with a bruised knee and a big cut, which required 2 stitches. She decided that she was unable to continue the match, which resulted in an immediate victory for the opposing duo. On Saturday, it was obvious that most of the advertising blocks had been moved, with some behind the judges’ table.
This incident didn’t just happen to Sönmez, as many other tennis stars have received setbacks in their game time due to injuries from the advertising boards. Katie Boulter, the British Tennis star ranked number 71 in the world, tripped over an advertising block just one day before Sönmez’s injury. However, for Boulter, her injury was superficial, as she was able to resume play a few minutes later. The scary part of Boulter’s fall was hitting her forehead on the hard concrete floor.
Sadly, there was another incident that happened a few days before Boulter and Sönmer’s injuries. On Tuesday, Alexander Blockx, who was a promising 21-year-old ranked number 37, twisted his ankle on an advertising block, which resulted in him having to withdraw from the tournament. Blockx’s coach and team are currently working to seek compensation for the event, saying that the block wasn’t supposed to be there.

A few years back, in 2017, a Belgian tennis player David Goffin also twisted his ankle in the same arena as Sönmez. Goffin, who was ranked number 12 in the world, was forced to retire from his match. His injury prompted a 6-week recovery.

Fellow tennis player Iga Świątek spoke up for Sönmez, saying, “I hope they’re going to put them in a different place or just put the advertising in a different way there, because it’s not safe, for sure.”
Even though Sönmez hasn’t commented on the incident, Świątek still said that if something happens, there will always need to be a reaction to make it better.
