Have you ever heard your teacher ask if anyone in the class knew about Starcraft? I sure have. But Each time I would be the only person to raise their hand. Why is this? Starcraft is a RTS game released in early 1938, and as of 2023 is 25 years old. With the sequel, Starcraft 2, being released in 2010. Many people born in the 2000s or later consider Starcraft and Starcraft 2 to be games for old people and refuse to even try the game, as proven by Anonymous, saying “I’ve heard of it but it’s probably just a low quality game for boomers.” But for many, this is far from the truth.
Starcraft is an RTS (Real Time Strategy) Game that includes many game modes, which are different forms of play in the game itself. Starcraft 2’s main gameplay is to gather materials with workers and build an army to fight the enemy’s army. The goal for PVP is to destroy all enemy structures and units, and for things like CO-OP and Campaign, there are different objectives you have to complete. These range from destroying giant shuttles to escorting trucks through an infested planet. There are also arcade game modes which players can create themselves, making the game have infinite possibilities for what you can play. You can choose from 3 different races, Terran (Humans,) Zerg (giant creepy bugs,) and protoss (aliens with crazy good tech that somehow manage to die to oversized bugs.) There are many different playstyles for each race but some players just prefer some over others. “I’m not a fan of the Zerg. They’re just too slimy.” Said Artosis
During a Starcraft 2 1v1 worldwide event, the gamemode received over 21 million players in the event, and that is just one event, of one gamemode. With Starcraft 2 being one of blizzards most well received and most revenue earning games, Starcraft 2 is not to be underestimated. Not only that, but the player base does not only consist of people over the age of 21, but also many younger people ranging from ages of 10-21. With one of the International Championship winners being just 15 years old.
Starcraft 2 is not just a game for old people, but for ages ranging from pre-teens to people who lived during tumultuous eras.
