On June 23, in Rostov-don, Russia, a military group that Russia paid to fight alongside them in Ukraine decided to threaten Russia because of a new law ordering the military group to join the Russian military. The next day, June 24, the two sides agreed to work together again.
However, this short rebellion surprised Russia, weakening Vladmir Putin’s power over Russia.
In February 2022, when Putin started the war against Ukraine, Russia’s own soldiers were fighting Ukraine. Recently, mercenaries, or soldiers for hire, joined Russia. The mercenaries worked for a company called Wagner Groups.
Wagner Groups is led by a man named Yevgeny Prigozhin. He had helped Vladmir Putin many times before and Vladmir Putin had used the Wagner Groups mercenaries to do things that he knew Russia soldiers would despise.
In the past few days, Putin passed a new law. The rule stated that the soldiers from Wagner Groups had to join the Russian military force. Prigozhin disapproved of this law, because it would cause him to lose his control over the mercenaries.
According to “News For Kids,” “Prigozhin called for a “march for justice”. He turned 25,000 of Wagner’s soldiers away from the fighting in Ukraine and sent them back to Russia. Wagner soldiers then took control of the city Rostov-on-Don, as well as the military bases there.
On Saturday, Mr. Prigozhin demanded that Russia get rid of its top two military leaders, or Wagner’s forces would march on Russia’s capital, Moscow. Mr. Putin soon responded, accusing Wagner’s soldiers of treason and rebellion. He promised strong punishments for everyone involved.”
