In Scotland and Northern Ireland, schools are on holiday because of the dangerous heatwaves that are occurring. But, in England and Wales, schools have found different ways to keep students cool in school instead of closing schools.

Since the weather is hot, some schools are letting kids wear their P.E. kit instead of their uniforms to reduce heat, and they are also shortening the students’ time outside to help them cool down.

“At school we’ve had movie time in the shade during breaks, had ice lollies, the teachers have misted us with water and we’ve kept hydrated,” Old Oak Maple told Newsround.

At Kind Charles I Primary School in Worcestershire, hot foods have been taken off the lunch menu and ovens have been banned and the Buenopfield Primary School in Durham told schools that they brought an ice cream van to hand out cool treats for all the students to help cool them down.

For some schools, they did not have enough AC to keep students cool. So instead of spending the morning in the hot school, teachers decided they could spend their morning learning at a nearby church that offered better cooling.

The government suggested that schools keep children indoors as much as possible, wearing sunscreen, and have plenty of water to be provided so students won’t get dehydrated.

Schools are trying to figure out even more ways to keep students safe from the hot weather during school hours.
