We all knew that this day was bound to happen, but no matter how hard we tried we couldn’t prepare ourselves. How cruel it is to become so close only to leave and never return only a week later. I still cannot accept that I may not see you ever again.
Summer camp was one of the best weeks I’ve ever experienced. I had reservations and fears about traveling across the country by myself to an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. However, it gave me freedom to explore new topics, ideas, and, most importantly, meet new people from around the globe. I quickly made a home for myself thanks to all of you for supporting me.
Even if you’re oceans apart, I hold these special memories close. I’ll always remember the circle we always sat in, laughing, and joking together forever. I wish that the sun would rise tomorrow, and I’d find myself on our morning runs, just like we did every day. I wish that I could relive our late-night conversations and study sessions together. I hope that the next time I have lunch, you’ll be right beside me smiling. I can still hear the sound of music and dancing ringing in my ear. I can still feel the pitter patter of the rain as we sprinted for shelter. This past week has been euphoria, but even the sun must set in paradise.
Thank you for spending the Fourth of July with me in the most memorable way. I loved seeing the sparklers glow in the dark and gazing at the stars lighting up the sky. As we sat in the darkness by the warmth of the campfire, I felt like that moment could last forever. But, just like the momentary sparkle of the sparklers, all things that burn bright must diminish. Even the strong, steadfast hearth that provided light eventually faded.
Although I miss my home, I miss you even more. Twelve days was not nearly enough for me, however I know we all will never be in the same place again. I wish you success in your future endeavors, and I trust that you will remember me.
Yet I still cannot bring myself to say ‘goodbye’. It’s just like you said, “true friends never say goodbye, only see you soon.” I know that we’ll meet again, in this lifetime or the next.
Until we meet again,
