When the Russain-Ukranian war began, Nadya Karpova, a Russain club football player spoke out on Instagram. She believes that Russia’s government is putting forth propaganda, spreading fake news around the country.
According to BBCSport, Karpova plays club football for Espanyol in Spain and is the only member of the Russian women’s team that has spoken out against war in Ukraine, and she continues to do so almost daily. Since the war begun, Karpova has been posting anti-war messages on Instagram where she has more than 143,000 followers.
“I can’t just look at this inhumanity and stay silent,” Nadya Karpova said. “I don’t know what would happen if I was in Russia, not in Spain, but I feel a special responsibility to speak out.”
According to BBCSport, an interview with Karpova took place in Barcelona, in a Chinese restaurant. When they started to talk, Karpova was careful with her words.
“Russian propaganda is trying to persuade Russians that we are a very special nation and the whole world is against us and our ‘unique mission’,” Karpova said.
“What unique mission are you talking about? I don’t think that Russians are special. At the same time, I am not ashamed to be Russian, as Russia doesn’t mean the government and Vladimir Putin.”
In March, Karpova v Espanyol by her fellow striker Tamila Khimych, who is Ukrainian. “When I first met with her, she looked at me cautiously,” Karpova said. “Like she was not sure if I was pro-war and considered Ukrainians enemies.
“I wanted to cry. I was thinking about her family and friends, and if they are OK. It was such a horrible feeling to understand that she could lose loved ones.”
Karpova was very glad after hearing that her new team-mate’s relatives are safe. But thousands of Ukrainians have been killed and many are still in danger.
“I wish more and more Russians – Russian athletes too – would speak out so other people who are against the war know that they are not a minority,” she says.
