Jennifer is a runner. She always has been, and always will be. It’s been an important part of her identity ever since she started running when she was six years old. The school year was finally over, but she still had to do lots of camps, and she spent a lot of time on the track.
One morning during practice, she saw a new runner. She was a bit younger than Jennifer. The girl seemed quiet so she tried to initiate a conversation with her.
“Hi, I’m Jennifer! It’s nice to meet you. What’s your name?” asked Jennifer.
“Alice…,” said Alice.
Jennifer was confused because Alice suddenly walked away. She thought to herself, “Ok weirdo, I was just trying to be nice.” But then she felt that maybe Alice was just shy.
As they start practice, Jennifer sees Alice speeding up out of the corner of her eye. She was always the fastest runner on the team. This made her upset, so she started speeding up herself as well. But Alice also started speeding up. What bugged Jennifer the most was that Alice didn’t seem the slightest bit winded. Jennifer trips on accident because she is going so fast and falls right on her face in front of everybody.
Alice sees this and, to Jennifer’s surprise, comes back to help her. “Oh, I didn’t catch your name,” says Alice.
“…oh um…Jennifer.” says Jennifer.
Then, they became friends.
Every morning, Alice and Jennifer would push each other’s limits, both improving every day. They would hang out sometimes outside of the track too sometimes and quickly became close friends.
They had heard of a new team that was going against them. They decided to train harder than ever. They had also decided to form a relay team together with Meredith and Bethany. Each day, they would train together, getting stronger every minute.
When the day finally came to go against their rival team, they cheered each other on and worked as a team to beat their rivals and win 1st place.
Jennifer, Alice, Meredith, and Bethany became inseparable and cherished this memory for the rest of their lives.
