A massive winter storm has hit the US; it has broken many records for its low temperatures with huge amounts of ice and snow. The storm left thousands of people without power, so it made travel nearly impossible in some places. For a storm to be this big is a very unusual event. According to News For Kids, “The affected region is up to 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) across and runs from the US-Mexico border all the way into Canada.” The government has provided supplies and rescue teams to twenty-four states. At least 19 states got over a foot (30 centimeters) of snow. In many areas such as Colorado, Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania, there is snow that is even deeper. Some counties have been hit hard by the snow like Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Sometimes the storm is so bad it has been creating consecutive power outages for homes. Since the roads will be slippery, the government ask locals not to drive. Many flights had to be delayed or cancelled. The storm was so bad schools had been cancelled. The temperatures have dropped from -34 to -45 F. According to Kerry Breen at CBS News, “More than 87 million people are under a cold weather advisory, which the weather service said is issued when either temperatures or wind chills are expected to fall to or below 15 degrees but remain about 5 degrees Fahrenheit.” The cold weather might last a long time which means people will have to buy winter gear and get used to the weather.
