Rachel Entrekin’s Road to Success
The Cocodona 250 is a ultramarathon that took place in Black Canyon City, Arizona in May of this year. It’s a test of endurance where you run for 250 miles with little-to-no breaks.
In May, an extraordinary runner named Rachel Entrekin was the first woman to not only finish that race, but, she completely outclassed the first man who crossed it by more than a whole hour! In fact, most runners who compete don’t even finish the race.
The extreme environment is too harsh for some competitors. Some runners get exhausted and hallucinate. The terrains in Arizona range from deserts, mountains, and even jungles, making it hard for Entrekin to stay strong and persevere. Entrekin ran for days and nights while barely sleeping; she only slept for about seven minutes each break. There were no beds, so therefore she had to sleep on the hard ground. During the race, she had to eat to keep her energy going. Rachel Entrekin said, “You get tired of chewing.”
So she ate mostly mashed potatoes during her long run. To finish the race, Entrekin thinks that all competitors have to have a good attitude. In Entrekin’s opinion, women’s successes shouldn’t be compared with men’s achievements. She also believes that “women shouldn’t talk themselves out of trying things just because they aren’t sure of success.”
In my opinion, I think that Rachel Entrekin is a superstar and a role model. She is an amazing athlete that always perseveres through hard times and powers through.
