Many Taiwanese citizens have mixed feelings about the U.S Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, arriving in Taiwan. The Chinese Government felt especially insulted after she decided to go to Taiwan, not China.

“The more unhappy the [Chinese Communist Party] is, the happier I am,” said Ingrid Ho, a Taiwanese resident. “Pelosi coming may mean all kinds of consequences, but at the moment, the excitement outweighs reason.”

For many years, Mrs. Pelosi has disapproved and criticized the CCP – China Communist Party – and supported Taiwan’s independence. This shows because, in 1991, Mrs. Pelosi went to Beijing and held up a black and white banner to commemorate the people who died in the 1989 massacre, which said, “[t]o those who died for democracy.”

Many people displayed big welcome messages on Taiwan’s tallest building, Taipei 101, to celebrate Mrs. Pelosi’s arrival. Many people waited for her arrival at the Taipei Songshan Airport.

However, there were a small number of people protesting Mrs. Pelosi’s arrival. These protesters supported being one with China. They started stomping on American flags and held up signs urging Mrs. Pelosi to “go home.”

Before Mrs. Pelosi arrived, China threatened Mrs. Pelosi that if she came to Taiwan, there would be dire consequences since, in China’s eyes, a high-ranked official in the U.S. government meant that the U.S. was supporting Taiwan and not China.

“I’m supposed to travel abroad soon, and I’m quite worried that Chinese military maneuvers will blockade us, and I won’t be able to go,” said a Taiwan citizen, Zamake Chang. “Before the Ukraine war started, people also said Russia won’t invade. Historically, there have been many wars that started suddenly. So really, it’s pretty tense now.”
