Elena held her breath trembling, fighting the urge to cry or even move a finger. She could feel a man’s hot sour breath just a few inches away from her face as he leaned close to her. Helpless and terrified, she lay on her bed in the middle of the night. How had a stranger gotten into her house? He could only be a burglar or some other criminal. Elena had woken up to an eerie sense that someone else was in her room and pretended to be asleep. The man slowly drew away, and Elena heard a creak as he tiptoed out of her room. After Elena thought he had gone upstairs, she finally released her breath and shakily took some quick, shallow breaths. She slowly peeled her eyes open. Whatever the guy wanted, she would not stay in the house and risk her life.

Elena got off the bed and cautiously inched towards the big window near her bed. If she could climb out the window, she could quickly run across the backyard to get to the door leading out to the front of her house. Elena pulled her curtains back gradually. Never had she been so thankful not to have the blinds installed yet. Carefully, she unlocked the window and reached for the lift. She swiftly pulled the window open. Beep, beep, beep. Her heart stopped as she realized that second that their house had an alarm system. Now she had limited time to get out of the house before being caught. The sound of quick footsteps upstairs could already be heard. Elena rushed to stick her upper body out the window and used her arms to start pulling the rest of her body out. Sweat in her palms made her hands frustratingly more slippery than ever.

Just a little more, she thought.

The footsteps were now downstairs and getting very loud. Her hips were getting stuck, and she struggled to shimmy out. Elena’s heart pounded fast and furiously. A strong hand grabbed her ankle and dragged her backward painfully. Elena shrieked as she thrashed to hold on to the windowsill. However, the force was too strong, and before she knew it, her fingers were pried away from the windowsill, and she tumbled out into the darkness.
