On Sunday, July 3rd, the Toronto Blue Jays team announced that their first-base coach, Mark Budzinski will be away from the team after the tragic accident of his eldest daughter: Julia Budzinski, which took place on Saturday, July 2nd.
Over the 4th of July holiday weekend, Julia Budzinski fell off a tube being pulled behind a boat on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. As the boat operator returned to get her out of the water, the boat hit a wave, causing it to be pushed on top of Julia Budzinski and striking her with the propeller.
A nearby boat witnessed this and the boat driver and the operator quickly jumped into the water to try to rescue Budzinski, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Julia Budzinski was 17 years old when the accident took place. The team told others that Mark Budzinski will be away from the team to be with his wife, Monica, and his other children, Josh and Lily.
Ross Atkins, the Blue Jays’ Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager, told the public in the announcement, “The Budzinskis have been part of our Blue Jays family over the last four seasons. This devastating loss is felt by our entire organization and we grieve alongside Bud and his family.”
“I have known Bud for more than 25 years and have always admired his commitment as a dad and husband first. He is loved and well-respected by our entire clubhouse and holds a special place in all our hearts,” he added.
On Sunday, before the first pitch, the Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays lined up along the foul lines for a moment of silence. Tampa Bay Rays manager: Kevin Cash said his team was “heartbroken” for what has happened.
Tigers manager, A.J. Hinch, who roomed with Budzinski during his minor league career, also expressed support for Budzinski before Detroit hosted the Kansas City Royals.
While Mark Budzinski is gone, Bullpen coach: Luis Hurtado, will coach first base in his absence.
