Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster who has been the World Chess Champion for five years. He is also a three-time World Rapid Chess Champion as well as a five-time World Blitz Chess. However, he has recently announced that he will not be competing in the World Chess Championship next year.

Carlsen’s decision to skip the chance to defend his title came from the chess Grandmaster last Wednesday. Carlsen’s decision not to participate in the championship match next year means there will be a new world chess champion soon.

According to The New York Times, whoever wins next year’s world championship match might be seen as an “illegitimate, or at least severely diminished, champion.”

Carlsen’s successor faces more than just the incredible talent and skill of the Norwegian chess champion. Carlsen is also very prevalent in the public eye. He’s modeled for a clothing brand, holds a large stake in a global publicly traded chess company named after him (Play Magnus), and has staged exhibitions at financial and technological conventions. He has even appeared on a Norwegian reality TV show.

“His decision not to defend the title is undoubtedly a disappointment for the fans and bad news for the spectacle,” said president of the International Chess Federation Arkady Dvorkovichthe in a statement released by the organization last week. “It leaves a big void.”

The International Chess Federation is the game’s governing body and is the organizer the world championship match.
