During the weekend of August 2-3rd, riders from Lexington will join up with more than 6,800 riders in the annual Pan-Mass Challenge, a two-day bike marathon across Massachusetts that raises an enormous amount of funds for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber cancer institute. Since its inception in 1980, the Pan-Mass Challenge has raised over $1 billion for Dana-Farber, making it the biggest contributor to the Dana-Farber cancer institute(JimmyFund).

Among the Lexington riders participating is Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Kennealy, who has taken part in biking for the PMC for over 20 years, riding in the honor of a cancer survivor close to his family. “We ride the PMC because we believe wholeheartedly in its mission and in how effectively they pursue it.” Kennealy said “The results are real and the impact on cancer research has been tremendous”.

Another Lexington resident, Joe Petner, a survivor of prostate cancer himself, harbors a deeply personal connection and perspective to the ride. His connection began back in 1995 when his daughter was diagnosed with a rare blood disease. His late wife was also a breast cancer survivor, and his family’s experience with cancer continues to drive his passion for the cause to pass the help on to others. “It is inspiring to know that what you’re doing is going to matter to someone, some family, some child,” said Petner.

Both riders emphasize the emotional experience of the ride. Along the trail, signs, and posters of patients, especially children, serve as a moving reminder as to why they ride. “When you come to the rest stop and see posters of kids, I always say, this is why we ride,” said Petner.

Over the years, Pan-Mass Challenge has become a family tradition for many of these riders, including Kennealy’s children, who he’s ridden with since 2019. With thousands of participants, ranging from riders to spectators and to donors, the event embodies the compassion, community, and determination of the people. As Petner puts it, “You do not have to be a professional athlete to make a difference—you just have to show up and ride”.
