India Concucts First Census in 15 years
India began a 33-question census in April 2026, where about 30 million officials are collecting data from about 1.4 billion people in India. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed survey, which was supposed to take place in 2021. The census is expected to continue until February 2027. For the first time in India’s history, the census will be conducted with digital assistance. The officials will use mobile devices to have people answer the 33 questions.
Government officials say the census is essential for planning the amount of resources needed for public services and understanding how India’s population has changed since 2011, when the last census took place. India passed China as the world’s most populated country in 2023, making another count important for policymakers.
However, the census has also become politically controversial due to the fact that the survey will include questions regarding caste. Supporters think that collecting caste information will help governments identify disadvantaged communities more effectively. However, critics say that getting caste data could deepen divisions in a country that is trying to decrease the amount of hierarchic customs.
Experts also warn that the long delay has already affected , making it harder to accurately measure changes in poverty, migration, housing, and education.
Officials say the census remains an important tool for understanding the country’s changing demographics. The census’s results will shape public policy, welfare plans, and political representation for years to come.
