In the summer of 2021, I began seeing more and more small crochet projects on my TikTok and Instagram feeds. Curious and drawn to the cute yet simple designs, I decided to pick up a crochet hook and learn how to make a stuffed bee keychain. It turns out, I wasn’t the only one interested in this new hobby. With hours more of free time during the pandemic, many young adults turned to learn how to crochet.

Crocheting and knitting have always been seen as grandma hobbies. They are laid back, relaxed, and require a certain amount of free time and a lot a patience. On the other hand, young people are typically full of energy, busy, and excited to go out and socialize. However, the pandemic encouraged students and young adults to explore new at-home interests.

The barrier to crocheting is minimal and anyone who wants to learn – and puts in the time to learn – can complete any project they wish. Gathering starting supplies is rather simple; all you need is a crochet hook, yarn, and a pattern. The ease of Amazon online shopping during the pandemic also encouraged beginners to give it a try.

Other online platforms such as YouTube offer free tutorial videos, teaching newbies the simple slip stitch, and moving on to single crochet, double crochet, and magic ring stitches. After learning the basics, I was able to find free patterns on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. For more complex projects, users offer patterns for just a few dollars on Etsy.

Crocheters are free to make all sorts of things, from clothes to bags to amigurumi (small stuffed yarn creatures). With just knowledge of how to do a single crochet, I’ve made projects of small keychains for friends and other little animal plushies – octopi, whales, bees, and even a minion from Despicable Me. Not only is the process simple and enjoyable, crocheters come out with tangible rewards of their final projects, creations that drew me into the art and continue to motivate me.
