World Cup Begins in US, Canada, & Mexico
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is hosted in North America this year. The number of teams has been expanded from 32 teams to 48. This allows more opportunities for the countries that never had a turn to play. Furthermore, the more countries, the more fans. The FIFA announced that for the ticket lottery, more than half a billion people entered the ticket lotteryrequested tickets. For comparison, there are about 8 billion people in the world, so that’s 1/16 of the whole human population. There are only a combined 44 million ticket slots spanning over all of the FIFA World Cup games. Therefore, the chances of a person being drawn from a 500 million request pool on the game that they want to watch is less than 1%.
Setting the statistical numbers aside, the sheer cost of a ticket ranges from $60 for the first rounds to more than $7,875 for the premium face-value seats at the grand finale. If that doesn’t seem like much, the secondary market takes it to another level. While the true value for a front-row seat at the final round is at an astronomical $38,000, the marketplace has seen extreme outliers test the limits by listing individual seats for an exorbitant $2.3 million.
Ultimately, the high costs and tough ticket odds are completely worth it to the fans. A huge reason for all the excitement this time around is seeing soccer’s two greatest icons, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, playing in the same World Cup. Ronaldo is known for making brutal winning goals and extreme athelectism meanwhile Messi is known for his playmaking and statistics. Fans everywhere are holding out hope for a dream matchup where the two legends finally face off on the big stage. But for this blockbuster game to actually happen, Portugal and Argentina have to take care of business and make it to the quarterfinals first. Not to mention, this is also Ronaldo’s last world cup before retiring, therefore it makes fans hope to see him one last time before he puts his cleats down.
The eventual world champions will be awarded $52.5 million, but the award money is only the circumstantial goal of winning the world cup;, the real prize is the trophy. [run-on here, but the new phrasing is more clear] The trophy is cast using 5.0 kilograms (11.0 pounds) of solid 18-karat (75%) gold. Its base has a diameter of 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) and features two distinct bands of green malachite gemstone, adding another 1.175 kilograms (2.59 pounds) to the total weight. The cup is prestigious both physically and figuratively. The cup will be handed over to the world champions by President Donald Trump.
Awesome work on your revisions, Charlotte! There were just a few lingering run-ons but otherwise this is publication-ready.
