A Life-Changing Experiment

A swimming pool accident leaves Keith Thomas paralyzed, unable to even feel the touch of his sister’s hand. At the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, wires and pads are attached to Keith. Finally, years of being immobile have come to an end after an experimental surgery on his brain.

After the accident in 2020, Keith Thomas was unable to feel or move anything in certain areas. Finally, in 2023, Keith decided to take place in a bold experiment at the Feinstein Institute of Medical Research. This experiment started with surgery in Keith’s brain and spinal cord. During the surgery, five unique “electrodes” were put in his brain. These electrodes let him experience special sensations he thought he would never be able to experience again.

This article shows how these arrays work: “These devices can read electrical signals from the brain and also send out signals. The electrodes target the parts of the brain that control movement and feeling in the arms” (NFK Editors: Brain Implant Lets Paralyzed Man Feel Again). Pads were also attached to Keith wherever he was paralyzed.

These electrode arrays and pads worked together whenever Keith tried to move his arms. The electric signals from his brain moved to the electrode arrays, which then sent signals to a computer that processed the information. Finally, the signals are sent to the pads which then assist Keith with moving his arms by giving a boost for certain muscles.

This amazing experiment changed Keith’s life forever, allowing him to feel and move easier, something he had not been able to do in a long time. Because of the experiment and Keith, many lives other than Keith’s may also be changed in an amazing way.
