A New Game That is the Final Test for Hunger for Buns!

The Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee held a bun snatching contest on May 25, 2026 on Cheung Chau island.
This festival has been held for more than a century, and many participate because they believe that if they attend the festival it will ward off disaster and bring peace and safety. They also believe that retrieving a bun from the top of the tower will bring luck to the climber’s family.
The game is also scored, with each bun given an amount of points according to the height where it is picked. This year, two skilled people won this competition: ice climbing athlete Janet Kung and firefighter Kwok Ka-ming.
Although this competition seems fun, in 1978 it was banned because the tower collapsed, which injured many people. But in 2005, the fun game was made safer and the ritual was brought back. Because of the tens of thousands of people who go to the festival, it is often considered “climax of Hong Kong’s annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival.”
