This Saturday was unusual for English football. There were no Premier League matches in any of England’s top four leagues, which hasn’t happened on a Saturday during the season since Christmas Eve 2022.
The main reason is the timing of holiday fixtures. Boxing Day games were on Thursday this year, so the usual Saturday matches were moved to Sunday. This Sunday featured several Premier League games, including Leicester City versus Manchester City and West Ham against Liverpool.
The TV schedule also affected the matches. Amazon Prime finished its festive football coverage on Friday with Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Ipswich Town. Now, Sky Sports and TNT Sports are broadcasting the rest of the holiday games. On Sunday, Sky Sports will show Leicester versus Manchester City at 2:30 PM, and TNT Sports will air Brentford versus Arsenal on New Year’s Day.
Big changes are coming in the 2025-26 season. According to the New York Times, A new £6.7 billion TV deal will allow Sky Sports and TNT Sports to show up to 270 matches each season. All games not played during the 3 PM Saturday window will be available to watch live.
For now, fans can still enjoy a full schedule during the holidays. The Premier League spread out games this season to help players rest. Every team plays four matches between December 21 and January 5, but no team will play within 60 hours of another game. Sunday is acting as a “Saturday” for matches this week, keeping the holiday football tradition alive.
