Recently, a boat fire broke out in Long Beach, killing two elderly women and injuring three others.

A fire erupted on board a 35-foot power boat, according to the Long Beach Fire Department. It happened on the fueling dock in the 200 block of Marina Drive at Alamitos Bay.

Two women in their 60s were killed and three others, two men and one woman, all in their 60s, were injured. The three were immediately rushed to the hospital with burns, according to Jake Heflin, the captain of the Long Beach Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the emergency at 5:17 pm and dispatched fire engines and marine safety rescue boats to the incident. Bystanders helped the effort by trying to extinguish the flames and giving rescue workers more details of the incident. However, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Heflin. Firefighters stopped most of the fire with water cannons, but called in county firefighting support to make sure the blaze did not spread via embers, carried by the wind, to nearby boats or fueling docks. Luckily, no fire fighters were injured but they will all be offered mental health services if needed to process any trauma from the experience. They may need to recover from the stress or anxiety from the experience as they were also put in a near-death situation.

The fire created a massive cloud of black smoke that was visible for miles as firefighters tried stopping it from the water and on land.

Daniel Quinn, who was at a nearby Crab Pot restaurant at the time, said he heard a loud explosion, “like someone landed on the roof.” He continued, “There was a big bang and I looked up, and there was this ginormous plume of black smoke,”
