On August 1, 2023, roller-coaster riders of the Magnum XL-200 were stuck up at the top of a 205-foot drop.
The Magnum XL-200 is a roller coaster in Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, that opened in 1989. The ride won world’s tallest roller coaster in the Guinness World Record. Cedar Point claims on its website that the scenery of Lake Erie will blow away riders. The ride lasts around 2 minutes, and riders experience twists, turns, and drops.
A check engine light situation caused a malfunction. A check engine light situation means that a car’s programming finds a problem with the engine or transmission, which causes it to turn on the check engine light to warn the rider or driver that something is wrong with their vehicle. The ride was signaled to have something wrong with its engine, which caused the ride just to stop working.
When the ride suddenly stopped, Tony Cafego was on the Magnum XL-200 with her stepson. Cafego said that they were stuck for around 20-30 minutes.
“It wasn’t not knowing what was going to happen next the most frustrating part,” Cafego said. “It took them a while before coming to the speakers to say that they were sending maintenance.”
The riders got down safely by using the steep set of stairs attached nearby the roller coaster. Cafego said that going down was the hardest part.
“The stairs were definitely the hardest part, my legs are still sore from it,” Cafego said.
Cafego added that the stairs were angled weirdly, making walking down uncomfortable and awkward.
For compensation, riders got a fast-pass voucher for one ride. When one rider was asked if he would return to Cedar Point, he said yes.
“Yes, I would definitely go visit Cedar Point again to ride some more rides,” the rider answered.
Cafego said that this incident wouldn’t stop her from experiencing the thrill and fun of roller-coasters.
