Why Students Should Not Bring Phones to School
I believe students should not bring their phones to school because phones are a major distraction, they reduce concentration in class, and they do not help students study effectively. School is a place where students come to learn and focus on their studies. If phones prevent students from concentrating or distract them from their work, they do not belong on campus. The entire purpose of being at school is to learn.
First, phones can distract students and reduce their concentration in class. Students might choose to doomscroll instead of paying attention to their lessons. Students might as well not come to school at all if they spend class time on their devices. Even if many teachers do not enforce rules against it, it is still a problem worth taking seriously. Teachers should ban all kinds of electronic devices to help students concentrate more in class.
When students watch or play on their phones during lessons, they miss all the details the teacher is explaining. As a result, when test time comes, their grades suffer. In university, professors do not monitor students’ grades closely — students are responsible for themselves. If they miss the material because they were on their phone, they will sit down to an exam with nothing to write. Even when phones are confiscated during tests — and students cannot use them — the damage is already done. They have fallen behind, find class boring, and still do not want to listen, because they no longer follow the material.
Second, phones do not help you study. For example, in a math test, a student who did not pay attention in class might think they can just use a calculator on their phone — but they are wrong. Phones and calculators are confiscated during exams. Even if a phone were allowed occasionally, it does not exercise the brain. Students just get easy answers, and when a calculator or AI is not available, they are stuck whenever they face a problem they need to solve.
Finally, using a phone in class harms students and their mental health — especially when teachers do not address it. Students may like having their phones in class because they get to focus on what they actually like instead of “boring” classes, but mental health suffers when students bring phones to school. They do not pay attention in class, so they do not know how to do their homework. Many parents do not allow phones during homework time, which makes it even harder. Even if students do use their phones while doing homework, they end up staying up late because they spent class time on their devices. Staying up late every night is not good for anyone, even older students.
This is not to say that bringing phones to school is dangerous. But students should not bring them, even if the school does not strictly enforce a ban. Phones are distracting, they do not help students study, and they cause a lot of stress. We should ban phones at school to protect students’ mental health, reduce distractions, and improve learning.
