REVIEW: WHEN I FLY TOWARDS YOU

In an industry where romance shows are mainly focused solely on romance, “When I Fly Towards You” stands out. This Chinese show, directed by Mao De Shu, gives us an insight on the characters’ youthful energy and the delicateness of growing up with your friends. With its beautiful cinematography and wonderful plot, it is one of my favorite shows of all time.

”When I Fly Towards You” follows two high school students, Su Zaizai (played by Zhang Miaoyi) and Zhang Lurang (played by Zhou Yiran). Su Zaizai is an optimistic and outgoing girl who brings light into Zhang Lurang’s life. Zhang Lurang is a gifted student, struggling with comparison and high expectations in his family. As they cross paths, they form a bond that ends up blossoming into a heartwarming friendship. With the rest of their friends Gu Ran (Bian Tianyang), Jiang Jia (Jiang Zhinan), and Guan Fang (Guo Zhe), they navigate the ups and downs of their adolescent years.

One of the main reasons why this show is so good is because of the chemistry the characters share. Their interactions feel so real and genuine, bringing their relationships to life.

”When I Fly Towards You” also touches on themes like family struggles, friendship, love, self-discovery. The theme of friendship is central and it opens a window to how supportive friendships can truly make a difference in one’s life.

The cinematography is extremely beautiful, making the show feel like you’re watching it in real life. There are also snippets at the end of each episode where the female lead films on her camcorder, adding nostalgia through the personal moments that may not be conveyed as well through regular cameras.

One aspect this show fell short in was the lack of pivotal moments in the show. This show is very simple and easy to watch, due to the fact that there aren’t many plot twists. I do enjoy this part of the show as it makes it one that is very rewatch-able. The producers could have added some more ups and downs to make it more memorable for viewers.

This show is recommended for those who enjoy slice of life and youthful shows. It’s especially fun to watch in the summer and is the type of show that you could rewatch many, many times without getting bored.

Likewise, this series has had good reviews from audiences and critics. It was praised for its genuine storytelling and wonderful performance from the cast. Fans appreciate the realistic portrayal of young love and the depiction of teenage life.
