The World Cup Brings Fans from Everywhere, but Not Pitts
The FIFA World Cup is currently taking place this summer. It has brought many excited soccer fans from all around the world to the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Meanwhile, Andrian Pitts, a resident of the Renaissance community, is not thrilled that World Cup fans is disrupting his neighborhood.
The SoFi Stadium is part of Hollywood Park and was built on the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack. It has 70,000 seats and is hosting multiple World Cup matches. Pitts’s residence is only 14 feet from the Hollywood Park development’s property line.
Every game at the SoFi Stadium is a great inconvenience for Pitts. For instance, because of the World Cup, traffic in that area is terrible. Now, for Pitts, on event nights, he must drive 45 minutes instead of just 12.
“Honestly, the traffic during football season is worse,” Pitts, 55, said later that weekend. “It’s not the World Cup. It’s the whole thing. Our city’s a little bit different now.”
When Pitts originally moved into the Renaissance in 2006, the SoFi Stadium still had not been built. There was only the old Hollywood Park Racetrack, which was no longer in use.
Pitts installed at least eight security cameras on his property to oversee the fans wandering back to their cars late at night. He said that you can see his bathroom mirror from outside one of his windows, which he can no longer open due to the loud noises.
Many of Pitts’ neighbors feel irritated because of any event happening at the SoFi Stadium. One time, Pitts came home to see a group of younger fans hopping the property fence, presumably pursuing a quicker and easier exit. Many similar incidents kept happening in the following weeks.
Pitts said, “People say, ‘Oh my God, you’re so lucky, you live next to the stadium.’ And I ask people, ‘Why am I so lucky?’” This shows that people do not understand the downside of things until they have experienced it themselves.
The SoFi Stadium hosts many other events for the NFL and performances by artists, like Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, and BTS. Pitts home’s value has almost doubled to the price of $900,000.
Due to FIFA rules, the SoFi Stadium is being called the Los Angeles Stadium for the World Cup. In the future, the stadium will also host some Olympic events in 2028 and another Super Bowl next year. This means the misery for Pitts and his neighbors is not over quite yet.
