This week, one of the most interesting things I read about was the social media ban in Britain. The reason why I found the ban interesting is because I use social media platforms a lot, especially YouTube for entertainment. I can somewhat understand why the government would want to ban social media because it can expose kids to harmful content, cyberbullying, and other online dangers. However, social media also has many benefits. Networking platforms allow kids to stay in touch with their friends, learn new things, express themselves, and share their interests with others.
After reading the article, it’s difficult for me to decide whether I agree with or disagree with the ban. Even though I think the government has a good reason to ban social media, banning an already-huge part of young peoples’ lives is a bit drastic in my opinion. Social media has become a huge part of everyday life, and many people use it in positive and responsible ways. Instead of banning it, I think it would make more sense to create stronger safety rules and better protections for younger users, like sorting videos into age categories so the younger kids won’t see things that can cause problems. This article made me think more about how we can balance online safety with the benefits of social media.
