Laos Cave Flood Rescue Mission Ends With Two Men Still Missing
A rescue operation for seven men trapped in a cave has ended with two men still missing. Eight locals were originally trapped in a cave after a flash flood, and one man managed to get out to call the authorities to save the other men. The mission was called off after an earthquake made the cave too unstable.
driven by poverty to search for gold. When the group was still inside, rain from the monsoon season, or the wet season, caused quick flooding that blocked of the cave entrance.
A professional team of cave divers quickly arrived to help the stranded seven. They found five men huddled on a ledge. They got one man out, while workers pumped air into the mud to create air bubbles. The other four men saw a chance, then got out with the help of the air bubbles.
Then, the divers explored the cave more and in further areas to find the missing two men. However, part of the entrance collapsed, and the cave became too dangerous to explore more. The mission ended to protect the cave divers. Workers are still removing water, but experts believe that the chances of finding the men alive are very low.
This crisis amplifies a problem in Laos. Driven by poverty, locals often enter unmapped tunnels without proper safety gear or mining tools. They hope to strike it rich by finding gold, but the lack of gear makes them vulnerable to earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. Some groups of people hope this will push Laos’ government to punish illegal mining and improve worker safety.
