US-Iran Peace Deal Uncertain After Recent Attacks
Tensions have increased abruptly between the US and Iran, due to recent attacks from both sides. Though the two countries were reported to be close to a peace deal, the US and Iran have been striking each other on June 6 and 7 with missiles and drones.
The US struck some of Iran’s military targets this weekend, after Iran shot down a US drone. In return, Iran launched missiles at Kuwait, a West Asian country where the US has six military bases.
The attacks started while the US and Iran were trying to negotiate a peace deal. “For weeks, there has been concern that the current ceasefire could fail and heavy fighting between the US and Iran might begin again,” wrote undefined. Now, the current situation is tricky and uncertain, and the attacks wobble the promise of a peace deal.
In late May, President Trump said that the peace deal with Iran was almost complete. However, around two weeks ago, Trump was still deciding whether to accept the deal or not. “Then Mr. Trump sent the deal back to Iran with more demands,” stated undefined. Iran broke off talks with the US on June 1 after receiving the revised peace deal plan.
An Iranian government spokesperson said that the government was unhappy with the recent attacks and the US’s demands for the peace deal. This puts Trump in a precarious situation. When the war started in February, he assumed that the US would win quickly. But, that isn’t the case anymore. undefined wrote of Iran’s advantage in the war, “Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz has left Iran with greater power than expected.” Trump is under high pressure to end the war because of the strait, but he also needs to make sure that the war hasn’t left Iran more powerful than it was before.
Without a reliable peace deal, the Strait of Hormuz is most likely to remain closed, causing prices to soar even higher and producing more global problems.
The stability of a future peace deal rests uneasily on the current ceasefire. If attacks and tension escalate, and the ceasefire fails, a peace deal will be even harder to establish. If the US and Iran can pause the attacks and agree on the terms of a peace deal, the war could be ended, for the good and safety of both countries.
