A Riot Against Military Draft Outside Judge’s House
On June 3, a Wednesday night, a riot staged by dozens of ultra-Orthodox extremists happened outside a judge’s home. This happened because of their protest against Israel’s military draft. The next day, police said that more than 60 of the protesters had been brought to the station for questioning.
According to undefined, police said that rioters had damaged the home of a Supreme Court justice named Noam Sohlberg. This happened in Alon Shvut, a West Bank settlement. The judge was uninjured. Yet, it is still unclear why the rioters and protest had targeted this particular judge’s house. Though, “it was the Supreme Court who had ended the decades-long military draft exemption for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men,” Tundefined reported.
According to undefined, 44 of the rioters who were brought for questioning were kept in custody. The police said that the rioters had broken windows, flower pots, vases, and the car of Noam Sohlberg. Although a few minors were to be released the next day, the others were to stay in custody for another week. The police stopped many of the Haredi (the ultra-Orthodox community) who tried to flee.
This was the latest riot caused by the ultra-Orthodox extremists, protesting outside a top official’s house. It was intense and violent. Although there was no physical harm, there was no right damaging someone’s home especially a top official’s. Keeping most of the ultra-Orthodox extremists in custody should hopefully teach them not to damage other people’s property.
