Ellen White Admitted into Football Hall of Fame
Many of us would never even dream of one day being admitted into a National Museum’s Hall of Fame, but Ellen White, a retired soccer player, has done it. The official ceremony will occur on June 18, and it solidifies her as one of the “defining figures in the modern era of English football,” according to Tim Desmond, the CEO of the National Museum of Football in Manchester.
The National Museum of Football teaches about the history of football, but also honors players accepted into their Hall of Fame. It is an important landmark for football fans, preserving football heritage and highlighting great players like White.
White retired from soccer in 2022, leaving the Lionesses with 52 goals from 113 games in her international career. Only a year after retiring, she was accepted into the Women’s Super League Hall of Fame along with Jill Scott and Anita Asante. White was widely known as the top scorer for the Lionesses, and said, “It’s a real honour to be inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame. Football has given me so many incredible experiences and opportunities, and to be recognised alongside so many people who have shaped the game is very special.”
After winning the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euros for the Lionesses, White moved on from soccer to broadcasting. Along with their head coach Sarina Wiegman, the team itself is also being inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame in the near future after becoming the first team to win a major game away from home soil. Although White is not on the team anymore, her legacy in the museum reminds us of what it takes to receive such an honor.
